Golden Hour Magic: A Sunset Maternity Session at Iona Beach

There’s something truly magical about maternity sessions at sunset — especially when they take place at one of the most beautiful coastal spots in the Lower Mainland.

Recently, I met one of my wonderful returning families at Iona Beach Regional Park in Richmond for the sweetest maternity session as they prepare to welcome baby number two.

As a maternity and family photographer based in Tsawwassen, I absolutely love shooting close to home — but I will always make the short drive to Iona Beach. It’s one of those locations that never disappoints. Between the tall grasses, sandy trails, ocean views, and wildflowers blooming in late spring and summer, it creates the dreamiest backdrop — especially at golden hour.

Sunset at Iona Beach

We timed this session perfectly. The sun dipped low over the water, casting the softest golden light across the fields. The wildflowers were in bloom, gently moving in the evening breeze, and everything felt calm and warm — the kind of sunset you wish you could bottle up.

And this mama? Absolutely radiant.

I’ve photographed this beautiful family before, so it’s always extra special being invited back to document another chapter of their story. There’s such a comfort that comes with returning clients — we already have that trust and connection, which allows everyone to relax and just be.

Big Sister Steals the Show

One of my favourite parts of the evening was watching their two-year-old daughter with her mom’s baby bump. She was completely smitten.

She hugged it.
She kissed it.
She talked to it.
She proudly lifted up mom’s dress just to peek at it.

It was the sweetest thing to witness — that innocent love and curiosity only a toddler can bring. These are the moments that make maternity sessions with older siblings so meaningful. It’s not just about documenting a pregnancy; it’s about capturing the transition of a family growing.

Why I Love Shooting in Richmond

While my studio is based in Tsawwassen, locations like Iona Beach offer something so beautifully different — wide open skies, textured landscapes, and that soft coastal glow that feels both romantic and natural.

It’s the perfect setting for maternity sessions that feel organic and relaxed. No stiff posing. Just connection, movement, and light doing what it does best.

This session was full of warmth, laughter, and anticipation. A stunning mama, an adoring big sister, and the most beautiful sunset to wrap it all together.

Baby number two is already so loved — and I cannot wait to meet them.

There’s something so special about photographing a mama in this in-between season — the quiet anticipation, the strength, the glow that seems to come from somewhere deeper than just good lighting.

Recently, I had the joy of welcoming a returning client into my natural light home studio in Tsawwassen for a maternity session. I’ve photographed her family multiple times over the years, so this session felt extra meaningful. Being invited back to document another chapter of her story is never something I take for granted.

This time, it was just her.

No distractions. No busy schedules. Just space to slow down and celebrate her.

A Natural Light Maternity Session in Tsawwassen

My home studio is fully dedicated to soft, natural light — the kind that wraps gently around you and creates that effortless, organic feel. It’s one of the reasons so many families love booking their maternity photos here. The light is flattering, timeless, and allows the focus to stay exactly where it should be.

And she absolutely glowed.

We kept the styling cool and natural — neutral tones, simple textures, nothing overdone. The vibe was calm, confident, and modern. Maternity photos don’t have to be overly posed or dramatic to be powerful. Sometimes the most striking images come from subtle movement, relaxed posture, and authentic expression.

Celebrating Strength & Motherhood

There’s something incredibly empowering about doing a maternity session solo. It gives space to fully honour the transformation your body is going through. This mama carried herself with such ease and confidence — strong, grounded, and completely radiant.

She looked amazing.

Having photographed her family before, I already knew how beautifully she connects in front of the camera. But there’s something different about capturing a woman in this stage — it feels intimate in the most respectful and artful way. These images will one day show her children not just what she looked like, but who she was in this season: calm, powerful, and full of love.
