There’s something really special about photographing families with their first child. This sunset session at Blackie Spit was all about soaking in that magic — the curiosity, the wobbliness, the big smiles, and the quiet moments in between.
This sweet family met me at Blackie Spit just before sunset, one of my favourite locations for family photos outside of Tsawwassen. If you’ve been there, you know why: wide open skies, tall grasses, the sound of the ocean nearby, and the most beautiful golden light as the sun dips down over the water. It’s calm, natural, and perfect for families who want photos that feel relaxed and real.
Mom and dad were completely smitten (as they should be), and their baby girl was right at that fun stage. She was full of expressions, curious about everything, and happiest when she was being cuddled, tossed in the air, or walking hand-in-hand between his parents. These are the moments I love to capture: the in-between laughs, the way parents instinctively reach for their baby, the connection that doesn’t need posing.
Sunset sessions work especially well for little ones around this age. The light is soft and flattering, the pace is slower, and there’s room for breaks and snuggles if needed. We let the session unfold naturally — a little walking, a little playing, lots of holding — and Blackie Spit gave us the perfect backdrop without ever feeling distracting.
What I love most about sessions like this is how timeless they feel. No props, no pressure, just a family being together in a place that already feels like home to so many of us in South Delta. These are the kinds of photos that only become more meaningful with time.
If you’re thinking about a family photography session just outside of Tsawwassen — especially around sunset — Blackie Spit is always a beautiful choice. And if your baby is approaching that one-year mark, it’s such a meaningful moment to document.
